Serengeti & Ndutu Photo Safari

Overview

One of the biggest natural events on our planet is the ongoing migration of the Wildebeest and Zebra in East Africa. In some years these numbers can reach as much as 2 million individuals taking part in the great migration. One of the best times to witness this extraordinary spectacle is during the months of February and March when the herds find themselves on the vast open plains of the southern Serengeti and Ndutu plains. These animals arrive in this area for the wildebeest calving season, which reaches its peak during February and March. The wildebeest give birth to their young on the Ndutu Plains and start preparing for the northward leg of their annual trek. Watching over a million wildebeest give birth is something of a miracle and of course the predator action that follows is relentless.

Over 8000 calves are born per day in the calving season, yet less than half will live to see their five-month birthday. Roaming prides of lion follow the herds; large clans of hyena and of course resident cheetah make for non-stop action. For these reasons Ndutu is a favourite with wildlife photographers and filmmakers.

This 10-day safari puts us right in the middle of this amazing natural event. You will be up close and personal with one of the most amazing wildlife spectacles on earth. We will be covering all the major wildlife hotspots around Ndutu Lake as well as the southern section of the Serengeti where the wildebeest will be during that time of the year. We will be using our own private vehicles throughout the entire tour and we will limit the number of photographers per vehicle giving each photographer unequaled opportunity.

Facilities

Ubuntu Migration Camp

The camp moves with the migrating herds of wildebeest. From June to mid-November,the camp is located in the Lamai area of the northern Serengeti and from January to mid-March, and inthe latter half of December, it is in the Kusini area of the southern Serengeti. With 10 spacious tents, each with full en suite facilities, Ubuntu offers guests the opportunity to uncover the more fascinating and unexplored corners of the Serengeti.

Ubuntu Camp is stationed in Kusini in the southern Serengeti. Positioned on a hillside, overlooking the expansive wildebeest-filled plains, the location provides access to a broader area of the migrating herds and the opportunity to go where the action is. This is also excellent cat territory, resulting in frequent action as predators identify and stalk vulnerable newborns across the plains.

Olakira Migration Camp

Olakira Migration Camp offers nine tents when settled in the southern region, one of which has two bedrooms for families. When night falls, our unique mesh-covered stargazing tent design, complete with wooden decking, provides the perfect opportunity to sleep under beautiful skies. All tents have en suite bathrooms with solar-heated hot-water showers.
