Capturing the Wild: Lower Zambezi Photo Safari
This photographic safari takes you to one of Africa’s most unspoilt wildlife photography hotspots — Zambia’s Lower Zambezi National Park.
Set along a 120km stretch of the Zambezi River frontage, the park offers an incredible concentration and diversity of game along the valley floor, framed by the magnificent Zambezi Escarpment and the old, almost ethereal Winterthorn forests. It is, quite simply, a wildlife photographer’s playground.
Elephant herds — sometimes more than one hundred strong — along with hippo, leopard, lion, wild dog, buffalo, and over 400 bird species all gather in this mesmerising wilderness. The Lower Zambezi permits off-road driving for key sightings, giving us the flexibility needed to maximise photographic opportunities and position ourselves perfectly for unforgettable encounters.
This is a safari where anticipation hangs in the air and every outing holds the promise of something extraordinary. From golden riverfront light bursting through the forests to heart-pounding predator encounters, the Lower Zambezi delivers the kind of moments photographers dream of. Join us and create images — and memories — that will stay with you long after the dust has settled.
Day 1
Arrival in Lusaka. After passport control and having collected our luggage, we will take a spectacular scenic flight from Lusaka to Jeki Airstrip in the Lower Zambezi National Park, where we will then take a drive to the camp.
Days 2-6
Step into a landscape steeped in timeless beauty, where the sculptural Winterthorn forests cast long shadows over a valley alive with wildlife. As the dry season unfolds, vast gatherings of elephant dominate the floodplain, joined by impressive herds of buffalo and impala. Predators are never far away — lion, leopard, and wild dog thrive in this rich ecosystem — and for those seeking something extra, night drives reveal a different world, where the sounds of the bush intensify and elusive nocturnal species take centre stage.
Day 7
After breakfast and our last morning game drive, we will transfer to Jeki Airstrip. From here we will board our flight to Lusaka International Airport where our safari sadly comes to an end.
Chula Island Camp is a beautiful tented camp that combines understated luxury with the charm and spirit of a true seasonal bush camp.
With only six guest tents and a maximum of twelve guests, Chula offers an intimate and exclusive escape in the heart of the Zambezi wilderness. Each tent is carefully positioned to make the most of the island’s setting, with sweeping views across the Zambezi River. The tents are bespoke and exceptionally comfortable, featuring high-quality linen, plush mattresses, flushing toilets, running water, and traditional bucket showers.
At the heart of camp, a stretch-canvas main area rests beneath the cool shade of Natal Mahogany trees — a perfect spot for relaxed meals, quiet reading, or simply taking in the sights and sounds of the wild.
