``Sharing the wonders of nature with people is what I love most, and I can't imagine a better way of life.”

My name is Dawie Jacobs, and I’m a happy-go-lucky, positive person who finds joy in capturing natural moments with camera in hand.

Nature has always been my passion, and I’ve spent most of my life in the bush. Sharing the wonders of nature with people is what I love most, and I can’t imagine a better way of life. My home will always be the Sabi Sands game reserve, a place close to my heart. It’s a haven for wildlife and offers endless opportunities for breathtaking photography.

One of the most fulfilling aspects of my work is witnessing the awe and wonder on guests’ faces when they experience something spectacular for the first time. Whether it’s a breathtaking sunset or an up-close encounter with a majestic animal, those moments create lifelong memories.

Outside the world of photography, there are a few things I hold dear. Biltong, country music, a good cup of coffee and sunsets are a few of my favorite things.

For me, travel is a way of experiencing the world in different ways, with different people. It’s a constant source of inspiration and a means of personal growth. The thrill of discovering new landscapes, encountering diverse cultures, and connecting with fellow adventurers fuels my wanderlust.

What sets Tusk apart from other companies is our unwavering commitment to doing things differently. We don’t settle for ordinary. With a passion for creating unique and transformative experiences, we strive to exceed expectations and leave a lasting impact on every safari journey we undertake.

During his journeys, Dawie has come across a saying that holds true in the wilderness: “You never find a leopard, a leopard lets you find it.” This reminds him of the elusive nature of leopards and the respect required to observe and photograph them in their natural habitat.

Dawie enjoys photographing tiny leopard cubs in the Sabi Sands.

Dawie photographed a leopard at Elephant Plains. It was lying on a road with unappealing vehicle tracks. To capture the shot, he lowered the camera to ground level using a monopod and a 300mm f2.8 lens. He then used a remote trigger to focus and shoot. This experience made him fall in love with low-angle shots.

Dawie advises photographers to think outside the box and approach their craft with a creative mindset. By pushing boundaries and exploring new perspectives, photographers can capture truly unique and captivating images.

One of Dawie’s most unforgettable experiences was witnessing the wildebeest migration in East Africa for the first time. The sheer magnitude of the migration and the sight of thousands of wildebeest moving across the plains left a lasting impression on him.

Choosing a favourite place is a challenging task for Dawie, but his heart will always belong to the Sabi Sands game reserve. Its rich biodiversity and stunning landscapes make it a truly special place for him.

Dawie’s go-to camera is the D850, which has proven to be reliable and capable of capturing stunning wildlife photographs

Beyond photography, Dawie enjoys Biltong, the colour olive green, country music, sunsets, and coffee.
