Baobabs and Stars Workshop

Tusk Photo is proud to offer this unique opportunity to photograph one of Africa’s most iconic subjects – The magnificent Baobab tree. We will photograph these iconic trees under magnificent starlit skies, at sunset and sunrise as well as during the day.

Baobabs and Stars Workshop - There is arguably no other tree that shouts “you are in Africa” like the Baobab tree. These huge ancient trees with their torn and weathered appearances make for some awe-inspiring photography. Tree limbs that remind you of hands held up giving rise to its scientific name Adansonia digitata – digitata refers to the limbs that look like digits and Adansonia refers to the French botanist Michel Adanson whom first described the tree in 1749.

Their massive size dwarfs everything around them and when you are up close and personal next to one of these trees there’s something spiritual and moving about them. Add into that mix the opportunity to photograph these trees at night with brilliant views of the milky way and stars is what sets this photographic safari apart from everything else.

We have chosen the best possible colder winter months to photograph our nightscapes and also coincided with the best possible moon phases. The colder winter air is hugely beneficial for better star photography and during the winter months the milky way is at its best.

Our dates are also carefully chosen to enable us to work with the moon.

On this workshop we will share our methods and techniques of how to photograph subjects at night.

Tour Itinerary

  • Arrive at Maswiri Lodge. After a light lunch we will start our first workshop on how to photograph at night. We will practically setup our cameras and make sure that we can all take full advantage of our first nights photography. We will then take a drive and explore the reserve and be able to photograph a few late afternoon landscapes before heading back to the lodge for dinner. After dinner we head back into the bush when its dark to photograph our first session with Baobabs and stars.

  • We wake up early to capture morning sunrise landscapes before heading back to lodge for breakfast. After breakfast we have another classroom session where we discuss best practices on how to develop night photography photos and other landscape images we have captured. Lunch will be served around 2pm before we head back to the trees for another photo shoot in the afternoon. Depending on the needs of the group this is a good opportunity to look at our next photographic technique - photographing artistic high key images of the trees. Early evening, we will have dinner at the lodge again before heading back into the bush for another night photography session.

  • An early morning photographic session is optional and depends on the energy levels and levels of fatigue from our busy photographic schedule from the preceding days. Breakfast will be served and after breakfast we bid everyone farewell on their journeys home again.
