Our first game drive back at Elephant Plains was exactly what we all hoped for.
Plenty of elephants could be seen almost everywhere we travelled and general game teemed in the bush.
We found some fairly fresh cheetah tracks and started to follow these, stopping occasionally to photograph different animals. We carried on this way until daylight started to fade, and this was when we came across a young female leopard.
It was exciting to watch as the leopard was clearly out hunting. We followed her as she progressed along, searching for suitable prey. Eventually we heard drama in the bush. She had found something. We dashed around and found her just as she grabbed a young Steenbuck. The Steenbuck was dragged up into a tree, giving us plenty of opportunity to photograph her with her kill as she progressed. Out spotlights were out and although the tree wasn’t the greatest for photography we were able to position ourselves for some really pleasing shots.
The time to return to the Lodge arrived far too quickly and we started a slowish journey back. We photographed hyenas on the way, a great ending to a really successful drive.
Tomorrow we would like to return to the leopard with her kill …
