Elephant Plains Safari: What has Salayexe Done?…

After a delicious lunch, introductions and a briefing we set out – for an excellent drive …

We decided to follow up on Anderson, the large leopard that was visible this morning, but he proved to be most elusive.

However, we did bump into a young female leopard we have not often seen before, with a rather clumsy name – the ‘Ingrid Dam Young Female’. She is beautiful and we all captured great photos before she went off into some thick bush.

Not long after that we found Salayexe. We didn’t see her at all during the first safari – and today we realized why. She has clearly been in a huge fight and has large wounds on both hindquarters and on a foreleg as well. She walked along very gingerly as seemed to wince as she walked along. It must have been a fairly recent fight, and she obviously only moves when she has to. Who knows who she battled, but it has left her feeling very sorry for herself. However, it was great to see her, and we all hope that she makes a full recovery.

As we drove around we saw plenty of general game including a phenomenal number of Zebra, Impala, Giraffe, Buffalo, Elephants – and a few Rhinos. So almost the Big 5 …

After a really fabulous first drive we are back at the Lodge, enjoying our pre-dinner drinks as we speculate about Salayexe. Was it a male Leopard? Another female? Or not a leopard at all? Hopefully we will see her again tomorrow …
