Botswana Overland Safari – Khwai Lodge: report from Wim: Lechwe Fest
We were up so very early and left Nata Lodge at 0600 for our drive to Maun where we had a quick pit stop and refueled our vehicles. Our convoy made exceptionally good time on the roads –
– and arrived at Khwai River Lodge in the early afternoon. After unpacking and a jovial briefing session we were ready for our first game drive.
But we didn’t go far.
We reached a beautiful sweeping plain, covered in rich grass and Lechwe. Yes, there were Lechwe from one end of the plain to the other. As always, they leaped gracefully over water channels or obstructions, and as one jumped, others followed. In the rich afternoon light, with the short grass, the ultra blue sky, and the elegant leaping Lechwe, we simply could not tear ourselves away.
We even remained at that spot for our sundowners … cameras ever ready for the next image … and the next … and the next. By now the sun was setting – creating one of those unforgettable, magnificent crimson blazes in the sky.
As the light waned, we finally did move on and soon spotted leopard tracks. However, it was quite late and dark, and after such a long day we decided to return to the Lodge, where we are now sitting around, enjoying our predinner drinks, and marveling afresh at the beauty of a truly spectacular photographic afternoon.
Tomorrow we would like to pick up those leopard tracks …
