Japan Winter Safari: A Delightful Day with the Macaques

Wim’s News from the Japan Winter Safari:

Today was our final full day at Jigokudani … and what a day it turned out to be.

Luckily for us by mid-morning we were virtually alone with the monkeys.

This gave us the best possible opportunities. We captured all those special shots – using back lighting, side lighting, rim lighting, fill-in flash – everything was possible.

And to add to it all, the conditions could not have been better. A heavy steam continued to rise from the surface of the waters, creating moody, misty conditions that created fabulous images as monkeys emerged and then faded into the mist.

Meanwhile the youngsters played in the surrounding streams, chasing each other, hanging from trees, getting up to all kinds of high jinks … and as always providing unending photographic opportunities!

A perfect ending to a perfect experience here at Jigokudani.

Off to relax in the warm onsen before dinner and –

Tomorrow we head for Hokkaido … the next step on our amazing trip …
