Summary

Snowy Owl Photo Tour

Tusk Photo proud to offer this unique opportunity to photograph one of the most sought after owl species in the world: the beautiful Snowy Owl.

These beautiful birds have white and dark brown feathers covering their bodies that supply them with camouflage in their usually snowy habitat. Males can be pure white, however females always have some brown feathers. Since snowy owls are found in colder climates, they have a thick layer of down underneath their many layers of feathers to keep themselves warm in even the most frigid temperatures.

Some snowy owls live in the Arctic regions of North America and Eurasia year-round. However, others only stay during breeding and nesting season and then migrate as far as southern states, like Georgia, in the United States.

For this six night safari we travel to Canada to specifically photograph these amazing birds that have migrated south to escape the arctic winter. To find the birds we use the services of an experienced Canadian guide who starts looking for owls from early winter. Once found a few months are spent to habituate the birds to human presence to allow us within photographic distance.

Tour Itinerary

  • Arrive in Canada. Either Toronto or Ottowa (TBC)

  • 5 Full days photographing Snowy Owls in the wild.

Snowy Owl Photo Tour – Itinerary and daily activities

Day 1  ~ Arrive Canada

Arrive Ottawa. Our Canadian guide will search for the Snowy Owls once winter sets in and these owls have arrived on their southward migration from the arctic. These Snowy Owls are wild and free roaming and there is consequently an unpredictability as to where they are going to be located.

As soon as suitable owls have been located we will notify you so that travel arrangements can be made. Suffice to say that we will either fly into Ottowa or Toronto.

Day 2 – 6  ~ Snowy Owl Photo Tour

Our days will follow a similar pattern. After breakfast we will depart to find our photographic subjects – Snowy Owls!! We then spend a full morning photographing till we are ready to retreat indoors for some warmth and a meal. After lunch we will return to the field to continue the fun – photographing our subjects till sundown. After a long day in the cold temperatures of the Canadian winter we will be ready to retreat indoors for a hot shower and a warm meal.

We have five full days of photography, which allows a margin in case of adverse weather and also time to explore different subjects and backgrounds and hone our skills in getting those tricky flight shots. The objective of this tour is to obtain as many great images as possible of an iconic bird species while also having fun doing so with a group of like minded photographers.

Day 7  ~ Leave Canada – End of tour

Depart for home.

Snowy Owl Photo Tour – Please Note: The Snowy Owls that we are going to be photographing are wild and free roaming. This introduces an uncertainty as to if and where the birds are going to be found. We at Tusk Photo safaris have limited this variable as much as we can by using the services of the best snowy owl guide we know of who has many successful years of snowy owl tours under his belt. But there is a possibility the owls may not migrate south from the arctic in any given year. We will be able to confirm that this tour is a certainty once we have heard back from Canada that suitable owls have been located. Our guide then works through the winter to habituate the birds to human presence. We will inform you as soon as we hear of this development and we understand that to be either October or early November. We will then know which city we are flying into and can proceed to make the necessary travel arrangements.

There are only four spaces available on this tour and we expect demand to be high so contact our offices as soon as you can to be reserved on a first come first served basis.
