Jaguars of Pantanal Photo Tour

This two-part, 19 day Jaguar tour will take you to the northern Pantanal where the concentration of jaguars and birds with vibrant, exotic plumage are the highest in the entire expanse of wetland. We make use of private boats with limited guests so that each photographer has the best possible front row seat to photograph these magnificent cats. You will accompanied by your professional Tusk Photo host photorapher that will make sure you have the best possible photo opportunities and results.

Jaguars of Pantanal Photo Tour

The Pantanal is to the Americas what the Okavango is to Africa. It is the world’s largest wetland; a mosaic of seasonally-flooded forests and savannahs covering 200,000 square kilometres, ten times the size of South Africa’s Kruger National Park. Of the 400 species of birds, 82 weigh more than 500 grams; the world’s longest list of large birds. The bird sightings are truly superb, but it is the abundance of Jaguars and Giant Otters that capture the imagination of most visitors.

After arrival at Cuiabá, your tour kicks off with a journey to approximately halfway down the Transpantaneira Highway to the SouthWild Pantanal Lodge. Situated on the forested banks of the wildlife-rich Pixaim River, this location is a bird enthusiast’s dream come true!

You then continue your journey into the Pantanal down the Transpantaneira road to your floating lodge (flotel) on the mighty Cuiabá River. Here you will spend your days on a skiff with an experienced local naturalist, who will wind you through a maze of waterways, deep into jaguar territory for very dependable sightings, positioning the boat for the best angle to afford you fantastic photo opportunities. Although the focus of this tour is on Jaguars, you will also see and photograph some rare and iconic species, such as Giant River Otters, Giant Anteaters, Capybaras, endangered Hyacinth Macaws, Jabiru Storks, South American Tapirs, Howler Monkeys and hundreds of Paraguayan Caimans.

You will end your tour the same way it started, with the option of boat excursions along the forested banks of the Pixaim River and more amazing photographic opportunities in the lodge’s gardens. You will overnight at the Southwild Jaguar Hotel for the final nights before journeying back to Cuiabá for your return flight home.

Jaguars of Pantanal Photo Tour

Ever since the days of the Ancient Egyptians, man has had a special awe for all species of cats. Their calm, quiet, lazy demeanour as they loll invitingly under a tree, seems to invite a tummy rub. This has cost many lives as the peaceful, even cuddly exterior contrasts sharply with a supremely powerful predatory animal. This dichotomy certainly provides a fascination for us as we encounter any of the cats in the wild, never knowing quite what to expect! The Jaguar is the largest feline in the Western Hemisphere, larger and sturdier than the leopard. It is an apex predator, but the numbers are sadly declining.

Among the vast diversity of wildlife that you will encounter on this incredible adventure, the Jaguar will provide a sense of awe and wonder as you get the opportunity to encounter the predator in its natural habitat.

This 19-Day tour will take you to the northern Pantanal where the concentration of jaguars and birds are the highest in the entire expanse of wetland.

After arrival at Campo Grande, your tour kicks off with a journey to Bonito where we stay for 3 nights. We have our days booked to photograph Red & Green Macaws at Burraco Das Arraras (The Macaw sinkhole) as well as the Rio da Prata (Silver River). In between we will work in some time to target species like the Giant AntEaters, White Lipped Peccaries and more.
The Macaw sinkhole is truly an amazing place where hundreds of wild macaws nest on the vertical sides of the giant sinkhole. From our viewing platform we will be able to photograph these macaws as they fly past our viewing point on the rim of the sinkhole.
Rio da Prata is another highlight of our stay in Bonito. This crystal clear river or stream that meanders through the forest is home to thousands of tropical fish. We will provide wet-suits and be able to drift down this magical stream viewing one of the most spectacular underwater worlds on this planet.

From Bonito we fly onto Cuiaba and spend the night approximately halfway down the Transpantaneira Highway at Hotel Mato Grosso. This convenient lodge is a welcome stop over en route to Porto Joffre where we transfer to our floating lodge (flotel) on the mighty Cuiabá River. Here you will spend 15 days on a skiff with an experienced local naturalist, who will wind you through a maze of waterways, deep into jaguar territory for very dependable sightings, positioning the boat for the best angle to afford you fantastic photo opportunities.

On Day 18 we transfer back along the Transpanteneira Highway and spend the night at Hotel Mato Grosso. In the gardens of this comfortable hotel you will be able to photograph an number of bird species such as Chestnut-Eared Aracaris
