Okavango Savuti & Chobe Photo Tour: A Very Promising First Game Drive at Khwai River …

Brendon Reports from Khwai River on the Okavango Savuti & Chobe Photo

Our Botswana overland safari got off to a great start at Khwai River Lodge today. We arrived late this afternoon after a beautiful, scenic, helicopter flight over this magnificent area.

Because we were rather late, by the time we checked into the Lodge and met for our very fast briefing, we set out almost immediately for our first game drive which of course was a little shorter than usual.

The number of birds was quite amazing, with plenty of Marabou Storks around feeding on frogs, catfish and other fish in the numerous small waterholes that are gradually starting to dry up. The area is very wetting plenty of ground water still around, and the river is very full – but less so than a month ago.

We saw a number of elephants, –

– some giraffe, and as darkness started to set in we saw a Giant Eagle Owl that gazed at us without much interest. It actually landed in a tree right next to us when we stopped for sundowners, so our cameras came out quickly to photograph the large owl as it sat there. It wasn’t even perturbed when we took the spotlights out and allowed us to take as many shots as we would like.

It was a short, but very rewarding first drive with a taste what we can expect, and after that introduction we are really looking forward to our next days here …
