Botswana Overland Safari – Savuti … from Wim: A Cat Full House
Having heard that there were the rare sightings of cheetah in the area we were ultra keen to try and spot the two during our final game drive at Khwai – and we got our wish!
Within minutes of leaving the Lodge we found them … and to add to the excitement, they were out on a serious hunting expedition. They were determined to try and catch one of the numerous Impala out on the the plains.
Two and a half hours later we were still photographing the pair as they stalked, chased, stalked again, and singled out likely targets. Fabulous nonstop photography! Then, to our dismay, we looked around and there were simply too many vehicles for the cheetahs to hunt easily, and after a perfunctory chase, they gave up. And so did we.
We moved to a pan about 100 meters away, keen to photograph the diversity of birds that we could see there, and when we looked back, what should we see but four male lions lying peacefully out in the open. We turned around to get close and photograph the handsome, healthy foursome. The lions were very relaxed, and hardly acknowledged our presence as we captured dozens of images from all angles.
And suddenly it was time to return to the Lodge for brunch and our departure for Savuti
After a pleasant drive through a deep depression and over sand ridges, we arrived at Savuti in time for our afternoon game drive.
Again, the elephant population here and the plentiful game makes it a pleasure to drive around. In fact there are several breeding herds of elephant, and if we had kept count, the total would be in the several hundreds for one drive! Every moment brings yet another sighting – of elephants, game or birds.
And we saw lions again! This time two large adults were lying sleeping – out for the count – in the afternoon sun.
And as we turned back toward the Lodge we met a magnificent, large, robust male leopard, very busy on his evening patrol of his territory. Our cameras really worked overtime there again!
That brought our cat sightings for the day to a Full House … lions, leopards and cheetah! Yes!
Tomorrow we would like to try and track the leopard …
